Meta AI is easiest to understand as a stack rather than a single chatbot.

1. The assistant layer. Meta AI is the product that accepts a prompt and returns an answer, image, edit, recommendation or action. Meta’s help center describes the standalone app and website as places to chat, ask questions, work with photos, generate images or animations, edit writing and use voice. That is the user-facing service people mean when they say “Meta AI.”

2. The surface layer. The same brand appears in different products: the Meta AI app and website, Facebook, Instagram, Messenger, WhatsApp and Meta AI glasses. These are not interchangeable settings. A chat in the app can expose modes such as Instant, Thinking or Shopping when available; a WhatsApp conversation has its own rules for what you explicitly share; glasses add camera, microphone, calling and location-dependent features. If you want to hide, delete or limit something, first name the surface where it happened.

3. The capability layer. Meta AI can answer questions, analyze a photo, create or edit images, animate an image into a video, handle voice conversations and, in current product surfaces, help with research, shopping, scheduled tasks or documents. Meta calls the social image/video creation experience “Vibes.” Those labels describe features, not separate assistants you should automatically treat as having identical limits. 4. The model layer. Meta AI is not synonymous with Llama, Muse Spark or any other fixed model label. Meta’s Privacy Center explains that generative-AI features use different models for different jobs, and product listings can change the model named underneath the assistant. A model name is useful for a dated product comparison; it is a poor definition of what Meta AI is. The durable description is “Meta’s assistant service, backed by a changing AI-at-Meta model stack.”

5. The data and contract layer. Meta’s AI terms say prompts, outputs and feedback are content governed by the applicable terms; interactions may be retained or used to personalize experiences and improve AI, and some interactions may receive automated or human review. Meta also documents sharing some messages and contextual information with selected partners to improve responses. That does not mean every Meta product has the same data path. WhatsApp’s help page makes a narrower promise: personal chats remain end-to-end encrypted, and Meta can read messages that mention @Meta AI or that people choose to share with it. Do not generalize WhatsApp’s boundary to the standalone app, Facebook or Instagram.

6. The price layer. The current iOS listing shows Meta AI as a free download with in-app purchases; the Android listing also shows in-app purchases. That is different from promising that every capability is unlimited or free in every country. Check the store listing, account and feature notice you actually see before treating access, limits or paid extras as universal.

The practical rule is simple: identify the surface, the job and the data you are willing to share before comparing Meta AI with ChatGPT, Claude or another tool. The brand is broad; the control and capability you receive are local to the product surface.

7. Before connecting email, calendar, accounts or third-party services, read what the connection enables and which product’s privacy policy applies.
8. For history and media, use Meta AI’s Data & privacy settings to export or delete what the help center says those controls cover. Deleting a local thread is not automatically the same as deleting every copy Meta may retain.
9. Verify factual, medical, legal, financial or safety-critical output independently; Meta’s terms warn that AI output may be incomplete, inaccurate or not current.
